Sejak dekade akhir abad ke 20, kecerdasan tiruan (Artificial inteligence) telah menjadi topik yg sangat menarik untuk dikembangkan dalam berbagai ilmu disiplin ilm. Nmaun, masih banyak kesulitan dalam menetapkan secara tegas lingkup kecerdasan tiruan berbeda dengan disiplin ilmu lain seperti Matematika, Fisika, Kimia, dan Biologi yg sudah dapat didefinisikan dengan baik.
Meskipun keberadaan kecerdasan tiruan hampir 40 tahun, namun saat ini kecerdasan tiruan masih belum dapat didefinisikan secara mantap beberapa pakazr ilmu kecerdasan tiruan membuat bermacam-macam definisi antara lain :
BUCHAN dan shorliffe (1985) menyatakan bahwa kecerdasan tiruan merupakan manipulasi symbol-symbol untuk menyelesaikan masalah.
WATERMAN (1986) mengungkapkan bahwa kecerdasan tiruan adalah bagian penting ilmu pengetahuan dibidang komputer yg diperlukan untuk mengembangkan kecerdasan program-program komputer.
RICH (1981) mendefinisikan kecerdasan tiruan sebagai suatu studi bagaimana membuat komputer mengerjakan sesuatu sedemikian rupa sehingga saat itu orang merasa mendapatkan hasil yang lebih baik. secara statistik, definisi ini ditiadakan karena sekali suatu program program komputer melampaui kemampuan manusia, program sudah tidak berada didalam kecerdasan domain kecerdasab tiruan.
